7 Million Fans Like Leo Messi’s Facebook Page in 7 Hours

Seven hours after Argentine soccer player Leo Messi started a Facebook Page, he has almost 7 million Likes as of Wednesday afternoon.

To put that number into perspective, it’s nearly 40% as many Likes as U.S. President Barack Obama has on his Facebook Page and about 30% as many as Justin Bieber fans have contributed to the pop star’s Facebook Page — but Messi’s Likes were gathered in hours, not years.

Messi, who plays for FC Barcelona and is considered by many to be the best soccer player in the world, wrote in a translated welcome message on the page, “Hola! Welcome to everyone. Thank you very much for the great number of messages that I have received. I am so excited! From now on we will be more closely connected … through Facebook.”

Lady Gaga beat Obama to 10 million Likes last summer, but we can’t remember another celebrity nearing the milestone so quickly. We’ve reached out to Facebook about whether Messi has set a Facebook record.

Update: Some commenters have suggested that Messi may have automatically transferred fans from his unofficial pages to his official page. While Facebook allows businesses to merge place pages with fan pages and to turn personal profile pages into fan pages, there’s not a public option to merge multiple fan pages. We’ve reached out to Facebook about whether Messi’s page administrator negotiated a merge with a Facebook representative.

Hacker Monitoring 300.000 Gmail User in Iran

300 thousand users Google email service (Gmail) on Iran should accept the fact that during this communication may be spied upon by a hacker or hackers. This is because they use fake security certificate that has been designed by hackers.

Previously, users of Gmail using a security certificate from the Netherlands, issued by Diginotar. However, since July 2011 website Diginotar hackers attacked and caused 333 false security certificate can spread to various sites.

Security certificate issued Diginotar should ensure communications made by the user of a website. With the certificate, website visitors, especially email users will feel secure because the communications do not be seen by others. However, since Diginotar attacked by hackers, the entire communication from 300 thousand Gmail users in Iran becomes vulnerable.

Report violations committed hackers discovered by Fox-IT, which then issued its report on Sept. 5. Fox-IT reports indicate that the hackers were able to access an internal system for a month before DigiNotar take action.

DigiNotar has asked the Dutch government to help restore the attack. Behind it, Google and many other companies have issued updates to ensure that the false certificates could no longer be used in email service.

DigiNotar is a second security certificate victims of hackers. In March 2011, Comodo also experienced the same thing. There is evidence that the same hackers were behind both attacks. Messages sent hackers through a site stating that they have also mastered other manufacturers' Web sites security certificate.

Earlier, the Dutch government has also started an investigation to determine whether personal data of citizens of the Netherlands as a file income tax returns have also been monitored hackers. Steve Jobs Doomed Himself by Shunning Conventional Medicine

Steve Jobs would probably be alive today if he had not put off conventional medical treatment in favour of alternative remedies, a leading cancer doctor has said.

Dr Ramzi Amri, a researcher at Harvard Medical School, claims the Apple boss had a mild form of cancer that is rarely fatal and that his choice of treatment 'eventually led to an unnecessarily early death'.

Writing on Quora, a forum frequented by Silicon Valley executives, Dr Amri said: 'Let me cut to the chase - Mr Jobs allegedly chose to undergo all sorts of alternative treatment options before opting for conventional medicine.

'Given the circumstances, it seems sound to assume that Mr Jobs' choice for alternative medicine has eventually led to an unnecessarily early death.'

Mr Jobs died earlier this month due to respiratory arrest caused by pancreatic cancer. He was 56.

His death certificate, released by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department this week, said that Mr Jobs had a 'metastatic pancreas neuroendocrine tumor' and there would not be an autopsy.

The certificate also stated that Mr Jobs had the cancer for eight years before his death and that he was first diagnosed in October 2003.

Dr Amri claimed that Mr Jobs succumbed to the disease more quickly because of his apparent refusal to embrace 'conventional treatment', especially over the last year, the period when he visibly began to lose weight.

The pancreatic cancer expert wrote: 'It seems that even during this recurrent phase, Mr Jobs opted to dedicate his time to Apple as the disease progressed, instead of opting for chemotherapy or any other conventional treatment.'

For nine months between his diagnosis in 2003 and at least July 2004, Mr Jobs 'decided to employ alternative methods to treat his pancreatic cancer, hoping to avoid the operation through a special diet ', according to a 2008 CNN Money article.

But the rapid advance of the cancer caused Mr Jobs to undergo an operation known as a 'Whipple procedure' in which he had his pancreas and duodenum removed. Dr Amri suggests that this procedure, which is only undertaken if the cancer is quickly spreading, might not have been necessary had the Apple CEO pursued conventional medicine sooner.

He wrote: 'The only reason he'd have a transplant would be that the tumour invaded all major parts of the liver, which takes a considerable amount of time.'

Dr Amri claims that had Mr Jobs had the cancer surgically removed immediately after the disease was diagnosed then he may well have survived with 'no residual side-effects'.

He added that as Mr Jobs had comparatively mild neuroendocrine tumors, compared to the far more aggressive pancreatic adenocarcinoma tumours that 95 per cent of pancreatic cancer sufferers have.

He wrote: 'In my series of patients, for many subtypes, the survival rate was as high as 100 per cent over a decade.'

Dr Amri said he had the 'profoundest respect for Mr Jobs and his legacy' and did not wish to offend anyone with his comments.

But he added: 'I have done 1.5 years of research on the type of tumour that affected Steve Jobs and have some strong opinions on his case, not only as an admirer of his work, but also as a cancer researcher who has the impression that his disease course has been far from optimal.'

When contacted by website Gawker, Dr Amri said: 'I wrote that on a personal title and it's my personal opinion.'

Facebook Tracks you Online Even After you Log Out

Facebook has had privacy issues for a long time, and while the company has been working to improve its image, today’s episode will likely set it back once again. Thanks to a modified cookie, Facebook allegedly knows what you’re doing online even when you’re not logged in.

At least that’s what self-proclaimed hacker Nik Cubrilovic claims. After running a series of tests analyzing the HTTP headers on requests sent by browsers to facebook.com, he discovered that Facebook alters its tracking cookies the moment you log out, instead of deleting them. Since your uniquely identifying account information is still present in these cookies, Facebook can continue to track you, Cubrilovic argues.

This means that if you log out of Facebook, you’re not really doing much. If you then head to a website that contains a Facebook plugin, your browser will continue to send personally identifiable information back to Palo Alto. Here’s Cubrilovic’s explanation:

With my browser logged out of Facebook, whenever I visit any page with a Facebook like button, or share button, or any other widget, the information, including my account ID, is still being sent to Facebook. The only solution to Facebook not knowing who you are is to delete all Facebook cookies. You can test this for yourself using any browser with developer tools installed. It is all hidden in plain sight.

So how do you get rid of these Facebook cookies in a way that will still let you use the service? Well, you can delete them every time after you log out of the website. Alternatively, Hacker News user buro9 says you can use the following AdBlock Plus rules:

facebook.com^$domain=~facebook.com ~facebook.net|~fbcdn.com|~fbcdn.net
facebook.net^$domain=~facebook.com|~facebook.net|~fbcdn.com|~fbcdn.net
fbcdn.com^$domain=~facebook.com|~facebook.net|~fbcdn.com|~fbcdn.net
fbcdn.net^$domain=~facebook.com|~facebook.net|~fbcdn.com|~fbcdn.net

This will supposedly limit your usage of the social network to just facebook.com. If you need to use it on another website, you can temporarily whitelist it with the AdBlock switch.

If what Cubrilovic found today ends up being true, this could be a serious problem for Facebook. I have contacted Facebook for more information on this issue.

This is actually similar to the scrutiny Facebook has faced in Germany, especially recently. See the links below for full coverage.

Google Shuts Down Buzz, Other 'Failed' Services

Google Buzz, Google's failed first attempt at creating a social network, will finally be shut down in a few weeks along with a number of products, the search giant announced over the weekend.

But vice president for products Bradley Horowitz hinted some of the products to be shut down may be integrated into ongoing projects like Google+.

"Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome," Horowitz said in a blog post.

In the case of Google Buzz, he said it and its API will be shut down and people will no longer be able to create new posts after that.

However, he said people will still be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout.

Also to be shut down are the social features on iGoogle, a personalized page for users with Google accounts.

"With our new focus on Google+, we will remove iGoogle's social features on January 15, 2012. iGoogle itself, and non-social iGoogle applications, will stay as they are," Horowitz said.

Other products to be shut down include :

  • Code Search, which was designed to help people search for open source code all over the web. It will be shut down along with the Code Search API on January 15, 2012.
  • Jaiku, a product acquired in 2007 that let users send updates to friends. It will shut down on January 15, 2012. Google is working to let users export their data from Jaiku.
  • The University Research Program for Google Search, which provides API access to Google search results for a small number of approved academic researchers. It will close on January 15, 2012.
The Google Labs site will also shut down, and as previously announced, while Boutiques.com and the former Like.com websites will be replaced by Google Product Search, Horowitz said.

"We aspire to build great products that really change people’s lives, products they use two or three times a day. To succeed you need real focus and thought—thought about what you work on and, just as important, what you don’t work on. It’s why we recently decided to shut down some products, and turn others into features of existing products," he said.

Google+ Tops 40 million Users

Google co-founder and chief executive Larry Page on Thursday said that its online social networking challenge to Facebook is growing fast and has topped 40 million users. "People are flocking to Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started," Page said during an earnings conference call.

He added that billions of digital photos are shared at Google+.

Page said social features highlighted at Google+ will be "baked in" to the Internet star's other online offerings.

"Last quarter we shipped 'plus' and now we are going to ship the Google part," Page said of weaving social and sharing features throughout the firm's platform.

"We are still at the very early stages of what technology can deliver," he continued. "These tools we use online will look very different in five years time and we are building these tools into Google-plus."

The Internet giant on September 20 opened google.com/+ to the public as it ramped up its challenge to leading social network Facebook.

The move came with an array of improvements Google to the social network it launched in an invitation-only test format on June 28.

Enhancements to Google+ included letting members take part in video-chat "Hangouts" using camera-enabled smartphones or tablet computers, or broadcast video presentations to groups of watchers using "Hangouts On Air."

Famous figures who have taken part in Google+ hangouts in past weeks include the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and Desmond Tutu, the retired archbishop of Cape Town, who is also a renowned human rights activist (Source : Hindustan Times).

In France, Teaching Kids How to Write Using Twitter

DUNKERQUE — Seated in front of the family computer, with his mother watching him, Lucas, 7, let his 30 Twitter followers know that "my cousins Eva and Léa are coming to my house tonight." It's just like he does at school. In 2010, Lucas was a pupil in the first primary school class in France to use Twitter to learn how to read and write.
Still far from the mainstream, especially in the rather traditional French education system, the introduction of Twitter is nonetheless spreading fast among teachers. As of Sep. 1, the website Twittclasses.posterous.com listed 81 French-speaking twittclasses, about 50 of which were located in France.

In Lucas' class, none of the students, and only a few parents, knew about Twitter when the teacher Jean-Roch Masson introduced the new school project for 2010 with the declaration: "We are going to be the journalists of our own lives."(See TIME's picks for the 140 best Twitter feeds.)

Every morning, one or two pupils are in charge of posting the first tweet of the day. However, before posting it, he or she needs to write the sentence in his or her exercise book, get it corrected, type it on a shared digital document and copy and paste it in the software managing Twitter. The short message then appears on the smartboard on the classroom wall, along with messages from followers of the class. When a new tweet addressed to them appears, the whole class can get over-excited. "I had to set up a few rules," the teacher says. "They wanted to stop everything to read the messages and reply."
In addition to the tweets suggested by his pupils, Jean-Roch Masson uses Twitter for new kinds of exercises: creating portmanteau words, discussing a word, solving math problems... or even playing chess with Amandine Terrier's class hundreds of miles away.

Terrier launched the first primary school twittclass in 2010 to comment on a school trip to Paris. Parents could follow the tweets posted by their children from the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre. The experiment should have stopped there, but when the same pupils arrived in her class the next year, the first thing they asked was "Teacher, when do we tweet?" To respond to this motivation to write, Terrier decided to use Twitter as a learning tool for civics projects, and to communicate with schools abroad.
"Those experiments were launched in very specific contexts," says Gérard Marquié, a member of the French National Institute of youth and popular education. "They are all located in rural, middle-class areas or in vocational schools. The pupils' situation encourages teachers to work on ways to motivate them, and open up." (See the top 10 Twitter controversies.)

Stéphanie de Vanssay, a member of a teacher network for kids with learning difficulties, says Twitter makes pupils see that reading and spelling is not just about getting good marks at school. "Just writing a line makes no real sense, but writing it for someone does," she says.

According to the psychologist and therapist Yann Leroux, the success of writing on Twitter can be explained by the digital medium's ability to break down inhibitions. "Children quickly learn that something written on paper stays whereas on the Internet, things can be erased. It avoids the guilt a mistake can provoke, and allows you to try new things without fear."

Not being afraid is one thing, but the pupils are also taught to be cautious. To avoid any trouble linked to social networks, each twittclass has created its own code of conduct. Jean-Roch Masson's class decided it would only go on Twitter "with a parent or the teacher to read or write." Pupils need to be "polite and nice" and not to give their "address, password or anything regarding their private life."

Get it now, Sony Ericsson Xperia X8

Sony Ericsson has had a bit of a topsy turvy time with its Android phones over the years. Its first few attempts, including the Xperia X1 and Xperia X10, didn't quite get the balance right but the X10 mini and X10 mini pro both impressed us and were intriguing options if you were looking for a particularly small phone.

The company's latest attempt, then, is the Xperia X8. It sits somewhere between the X10 mini and full-size X10 in terms of size, making for a small-but-not-tiny Android smartphone. It's also relatively inexpensive at just £130, or free on £15pm contracts.

The X8's design is a tough one to nail down. It's clearly not the most elegant device going and its plastic construction certainly makes itself known. However, it feels solid and well put together, and has a certain charm.

If colour's your thing, you'll be pleased to know the backplate is available in a variety of thereof, though the front remains pearlescent white whichever you choose.

Where perhaps the phone most prominently shows its budget orientation is the front and more specifically the screen. The markedly grey (rather than black) and plastic 3in rectangle is slightly recessed into the bezel, which slighty hampers usability. The bezel is also rather wide, making the screen appear smaller than it actually is.

Otherwise, the general hardware of the X8 is rather impressive. The three buttons under the screen are responsive and easily distinguished while the sides are home to more features than you might expect at this price.

Up top there's a microUSB socket (underneath a somewhat annoying plastic flap), the power/screen lock button, and headphone socket that is compatible with Sony Ericsson's inline headsets – thus the odd shape.

A headset that provides reasonable quality audio and decent noise isolation comes in the box however it isn't actually of the aforementioned Sony Ericsson proprietary type.

The left and bottom edges are devoid of features but on the right is a volume rocker and, joy of joys, a shutter button for the camera. Finally, there's the camera itself that sits on the back, sadly without an LED flash to accompany it.

Facebook Prepares to Integrate Music

Facebook Inc. is preparing changes designed to make the site a hub for listening to music, watching movies and playing videogames, according to people familiar with the matter, in much the same way people already use the social network to share personal media like photos and videos.

Facebook has told media executives in recent days that it will begin letting online music services such as Spotify AB and Rdio Inc. publish user activity on Facebook pages, much like actions such as adding friends or "liking" websites.

The move is part of a larger effort at Facebook to improve the discovery of all types of media content on the site.

If finalized, the changes could be announced at Facebook's f8 developer conference in late September, said a person familiar with the matter.

The Facebook initiative is designed to integrate the social-media giant more closely with services that let users stream free music or an unlimited amount of music for a monthly fee. By contrast, Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. recently started "cloud" music services that let users upload their personal music collections to remote servers and listen to them remotely, and Apple Inc. is preparing to start a similar offering.

CNBC reported Wednesday that Facebook was working to create a music platform. In response, Facebook said: "Many of the most popular music services around the world are integrated with Facebook and we're constantly talking to our partners about ways to improve these integrations."

In some cases, music services could create a player that would sit within Facebook, letting users hear music without leaving the site. However, the music itself would still be delivered through the third-party service, which users would be required to log in to before listening. Such players wouldn't be mandatory, these people said, so that if a user wanted to listen to a Facebook friend's Spotify playlist, that person might need to switch applications to hear it.

These people said that the new arrangement wouldn't represent a partnership with any particular music service. In practice, however, Spotify could benefit more from the changes because the music service offers more free music than its competitors. That in turn could mean that Facebook users could sign up for Spotify and listen to friends' playlists without paying.

One of the media executives said Facebook was encouraged to pursue the plan after its success with social games made by companies like Zynga Inc., the maker of FarmVille.

Meanwhile, Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. movie studio in recent months has begun renting movies on Facebook. As with the proposed music offerings, users watch the movies, including "The Dark Knight" and "Yogi Bear," on Facebook, but they are delivered by third parties. Warner Bros. charges 30 to 40 Facebook credits for the rentals, with the site taking a 30% fee - its standard cut of transactions using its proprietary currency. A Facebook credit is worth 10 cents (Source : Wall Street Journal).

How To Become Super Popular On Twitter

Twitter has become one of the most popular ways for Internet marketers to spread their message, but if you don’t know how to harness this powerful tool, it can actually negatively impact your marketing campaign. On the other hand, a well executed Twitter campaign may bolster your profits and reputation on the Internet. Projecting the right the image on Twitter is the first step to successfully marketing your products or services on the world’s most popular microblogging site.

Projecting the right image starts from the moment you sign up for Twitter. You should choose a user name which is quickly identifiable and unique to you. Many people opt to register their first and last name as their Twitter username and then associate that name with a business Twitter account. Remember, you cannot use hyphens in your user name, but you can use underscores.

After registering your account, there’s several simple steps you can take to immediately begin building your Twitter reputation. First, you should change the background of your Twitter feed. Changing the look of your page helps your feed look personalized and gives the impression that a real person is running the page, rather than a spam bot. Depending on the background you use, it can also help “brand” your Twitter account. If you can’t make a background for yourself, there’s dozens of websites that offer high quality backgrounds for free or you can hire a designer to create a custom background.

You should also take the time to personalize your avatar with your own picture or another image which is uniquely you. Next, consider what you will say in your bio space. Your bio must be 160 characters or less. That’s a small amount of text, but you should not use it to randomly keyword stuff. The best Twitter bios use full sentences and weave a few choice keywords into the bio description. For example, if you were tweeting about travel deals to the Caribbean, your bio might read something like, “I’m a world traveler, who enjoys trips to Caribbean hotels. While on vacation I enjoy going to the beach, scuba diving, hiking, and watersports.” Taking the time to make your profile look just right before adding followers will immediately set you apart from the thousands of marketers on Twitter who appear to be spammers.

Now that your Twitter page is personalized, it’s time to start putting Twitter into action. Inexperienced marketers may start plugging their services and products right away, but if you’re interested in becoming a well respected Twitter marketer, you will avoid this mistake. Instead, you should provide several useful and informative tweets that establish you as someone knowledgeable, or at least interested in, the keywords you are promoting.

One of the quickest ways to begin twittering is to create links to interesting blog posts or articles you find in your niche. If possible, provide a short commentary on the link rather than just the link itself. A great tweet will provide an interesting and informative piece of information, while also provoking interaction. Returning to the example of the marketer who promotes Caribbean vacations, a good tweet may read something like: “Scuba in Cozumel is great, but is Bonaire better?” followed by a link to an article about scuba diving in Bonaire. This method is more likely to produce replies or re-tweets than simply posting the link since it asks a question and even adds a little controversy, as different readers will have different takes on which destination is better. This tweet also manages to work in a few keywords.

Cozumel and Bonaire are both Caribbean destinations and scuba is a bio keyword. Google’s Caffeine upgrade is focusing on social media, so it’s more likely than ever that your tweet will appear on Google, thus increasing the need to include keywords and LSI directly into your tweets. Just remember that it’s more important to be clear and informative in your tweets than to have them rank for keywords.

Once you have tweeted a few useful links or messages, you will want to start making an effort to actively recruit followers. Many marketers focus exclusively on the quantity of followers, but this can be somewhat short sighted approach. A small targeted group of followers is far more likely to convert than a massive hodgepodge of followers. That being said, gaining a substantial following is the only way to successfully market on Twitter so it is important that you are proactive in finding them.

If you own a website, blog, or newsletter be sure to mention your Twitter username on them. Followers you gain from this method are the best prospects because they have already shown an interest in whatever products, services, or information you are offering through your Twitter feed. However, it is important to find new prospects on Twitter as well.

Use Twitter to search for other users who have the same interests as you and add them as friends. Some people you add will automatically reciprocate your add, either manually or with software. Others will check out your Twitter page before agreeing to add you. This is why it is so important to build up your tweets and personalize your page before attempting to market yourself to other Twitter users. When users who are weary of spammers go to your Twitter page and notice that you have made an effort to contribute something useful to the Twitter community, they will be much more likely to add you than someone who is just blasting the Twitterverse with their affiliate links and hasn’t even bothered to write an appropriate bio.

As more people follow you, your account will grow organically since people will be re-tweeting your information to their own followers, causing some of them to add you. In addition, some marketers choose to pay for Twitter followers. Paid services can scale up your operation quickly and some Twitter users are more likely to follow accounts which are popular, but it is important to consider the cost-to-value ratio of these services. One final tip to keep in mind: adding too many people at once may flag your account as being spam and Twitter has integrated ways to prevent this behavior into their system.

Once you have established your presence as a trusted and interesting tweeter you can begin promoting your own products or services on a limited basis. Experts have suggested that you should promote your own services about 5% of the time on your own Twitter account. This prevents Twitter users, who have become sensitive to marketers spamming them, from deleting your account. Of course, if you are presenting truly useful information on your blog or website, not just a sales pitch, you can integrate those links into your tweets more frequently.

By following these tips, you will be well on your way to cultivating a Twitter presence that is likely to result in conversions. Good luck and Happy Tweeting! (Source from : Business Insider).
